Craig Mercer, Chief Research Officer and Head of ESG at Dalton Investments (Australia), was recently on the investing podcast, Shares for Beginners. According to Mercer, “volatility is not risk. Risk is losing your money or the permanent impairment of capital as some like to say. So in many respects, we’re going through this period of heightened volatility because people’s emotions are quite high… But that creates opportunity if you’re thinking about the long run. So good businesses with strong business performance over long periods of time should win through this.
